The way you describe the city, i could almost smell the aromas. I had to pick up my friend from India at the DFW airpot a couple of years ago and she stayed with me for 2 weeks. She had brought spices back from there and i had to ask her to put them in my garage, the smell was really getting to me. Some of the smells are ok, but i am not really sure what these were.
